Baltimore bred, Texas-raised producer, DJ, graphic designer and nightlife curator HI$TO just wants to “make history in this game.”
In a short 24 years, he’s already created a label (Sector Zero), curated a successful Baltimore-based party series (PSYCHD) that has gone on to tour in D.C., Philly, and New York, played at the infamous day-festival Trillectro, and made such a name for himself in the graphic design world that even Diplo had to steal from him (and us over at HOTACTiON just had to hire him for our flyers).
Although his childhood was based in Texas, he moved back to Baltimore in 2010 and the rest was history (pun semi intended). Going to school in D.C. and connecting with respected artists in Baltimore–believe it or not, via Myspace–HI$TO solidified his presence in the club scene. By being present and keeping in contact, he eventually started to get more and more gigs (at the ripe age of 16) in the scene and even landed on the same bill as Scottie B.! His IRL presence was essentially catapulted and translated onto an entirely different planet known as the world wide web. Now, his party series reflects everything that his past has been about: dedication, practice, networking, raw talent, and a vision. “The past me would be proud of the present me,” HI$TO says, “I wish I could go back and tell the past me to keep doing what you’re doing because it’s going to pay off.” His sci-fi, extraterrestrial, and intergalactic interests shape his aesthetic not only with his party series, but also with his personal sound as portrayed on ‘YUNG SPVCE CADET‘.
When he’s not playing around with the sounds of the other planets that align in the sky, he’s making sure to play around with music from his own that “hurt your ears so bad… you know it’s bad for you, but it feels so good.” He’s a fan of all things club and bass that can be played at “ignorant levels”, and, when you hear his personal production, his Texas and Baltimore influences can be easily spotted… or heard? His mindset and visions are far beyond the galaxy his age is from, and that is exactly why he is February’s artist spotlight.
Be on the lookout for his upcoming “extension” of ‘YUNG SPVCE CADET’ and, for those in town, catch him during his Texas tour in March 2016; he’ll be hitting Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas. (Details to follow next week via his twitter account.)
