She’s the first female signee to TDE: SZA.
The first project I heard from her was her album “S”, which came out prior to her being signed by Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), the home of rappers Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and Schoolboy Q. SZA, 23-year-old singer, brings a new dynamic to this TDE powerhouse as they already have a full roster of quality rappers on their team. Having collaborations on her 2014 EP “Z” with members Isaiah Rashad & Kendrick Lamar on songs “Warm Winds” and “Babylon”, SZA has proven to be a vital force within the team. Her new EP entitled “Z” offers us a new sound in the female R&B genre: something more soulful, dreamy and less sexual.
The album hits a high at “Childs Play”, which features SZA and Chance the rapper over producer XXYYXX‘s beat. The song gives you a feeling of being on shrooms somewhere on a New York City street at 4am. “Z” isn’t the album to put California on the map as “good kid, m.A.A.d city” and “Oxymoron” did for TDE artists earlier this year; however, it does something bigger and gives both TDE and the music world a more universal, fantasy like sound.
This talented artist is sure to bring the world a new, tasteful and refreshing sound along with elegance and poise, making her the perfect combination of a lady in the streets and monster over beats.
Check out some of her music, and be sure to get the EP “Z”.
