This South African rap-rave group has caught my attention for two reasons: they are creative and they use kick-ass beats.

Watkin Tudor Jones (Ninja) and Yolandi Visser (Yo-Landi Vi$$er) make up Die Antwoord.

What separates this duo from other artists is how eccentric their videos are. They definitely step outside of the box and think of ways to shock the audience. When I first watched the video, I thought they were creepy and bizarre, and I didn’t understand if the video was serious or not. This is the reaction of many journalists, critics and music fanatics within the United States.

However, after watching a few more videos and doing more research on the duo I understand them and their art a little bit better. Die Antwoord describes their music as an “exaggerated experience” and “documentary fiction” designed to add shock value. Ninja had an interview with Spin and told them:

“The f****** God-given gift of artists is to create stuff from nothing. Die Antwoord makes hyperreality. We create exaggerated experience…People are unconscious and you have to use your art as a shock machine to wake them up. Some people are too far gone. You have to be futuristic and carry on. You gotta be a good guide to help people get away from dull experience.

WARNING– if you aren’t into anything remotely close to being scary, do not watch this video. Otherwise, take Ninja’s wise words and watch this video… LEAVE THE DULL EXPERIENCES BEHIND!

If you listen closely, they are actually saying something worth listening to… Also, the beat  is upbeat and fun.. Who doesn’t like that?
